Hawk Report from Prinicpal Rencher

1/17/25

Good evening, Nelsen families,

Earlier today our Nelsen students attended our Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grade level assemblies. During the assembly, our students and staff celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. As a reminder, there is no school on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Back in November, schools throughout Renton and our region were closed due to the power outages. Of the 3 days that Nelsen was closed, the entire Renton School District was closed for 2 of those days. We are required to make up those 2 days. May 27th was previously held as a snow makeup day. May 27th is now a school day. Our last day of school is now Friday June 20th.

During second trimester, many of our Nelsen teachers will begin their Student Growth Goal process. Each school year, teachers select a unit of study and focus on a specific growth area for their students within that unit of study.  Throughout the unit, teachers collect various data points to assess their teaching and adjust support as needed. A common goal that many Nelsen teachers have selected this year is a part of a school wide focus on academic discourse. We noticed that our students are often comfortable sharing their thinking in small group settings, but when the conversation involves most students in the classroom, our students are often reluctant to share their thinking. Our goal of academic discourse is designed to improve our students’ ability to share their thinking with their peers, which doesn’t only express their own learning, but supports the learning of all students in the classroom. If any of our Nelsen families have feedback on our goal focusing on academic discourse or any questions, please use this link to provide that feedback and/or questions - Student Growth Goal - Family Feedback

Next Tuesday is the first day for our wrestling and volleyball seasons. Prior to being able to participate, students must be registered. You can learn more about registration on our Nelsen website - NMS Sport Clearance & Registration

Enjoy your weekend.
