Principal's Message

From Principal RENCHER

Nelsen Families,

On behalf of our entire Nelsen staff, I want to welcome all of you back to Nelsen for the 2021-22 school year. As we prepare to launch the new school year, I am filled with excitement as we welcome back our returning students and welcome our new students to our Nelsen community.

We have two important dates coming up that I want to be sure are on everyone’s radar. First is Hawk Day, which is Friday August 27th. The next important date is our first day of school, Wednesday September 1st.

On Friday August 27th, Nelsen will host our annual Hawk Day. Hawk Day is time when students and families can visit the building to pick up their schedule, get school supplies, take their school pictures, purchase ASB membership, and pick up their free Nelsen t-shirt. Nelsen will be open for visitors on Hawk Day during the following times, 9:00AM – 12:00PM and 1:00PM – 6:00PM. There are no assigned times based on grade or alphabet, students should attend the time that works best for their family. If you and your student are unable to attend on the 27th, that is not a problem. We will be sure to provide time the first week of school for students to complete the necessary Hawk Day tasks. Additional information about Hawk Day will be sent to families as we get closer to the 27th

As we welcome all our students back to the building this fall, our school and schools around the state are still implementing various COVID protocols to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and entire Nelsen community. Earlier this summer, Washington State Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State announced that all staff, students, and visitors are required to wear a mask at school when indoors regardless of vaccine status. Please be sure your student has a mask when they attend school each day.

Throughout the summer, thanks to overwhelming voter support in the 2019 School Construction bond measure, our building has experienced some major construction projects. One of the large projects was a complete overhaul of the Heating, Ventilation, and Cooling (HVAC) system and classroom unit ventilators here at Nelsen. The project includes upgrading the direct digital control system that allows for monitoring and correction of the system from the district’s maintenance department. The project will provide better airflow throughout our school; improve air quality for students and staff; and keep classrooms warm in the winter and cool in the hot, humid months.

As we get closer to our first day of school, you can expect to receive additional communication from myself and our Nelsen staff regarding upcoming important dates/events, COVID related information, and general Nelsen information. If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. My email is

I look forward to welcoming each of you and all our students to the 2021-22 school year.
